Talking and listening
We’re very committed to community engagement – talking and listening to our residents, business owners, and people who work in and visit the city.
All of our project and proposals go on public exhibition so people can freely provide feedback. That is just one avenue of consultation though; we also regularly hold meetings and forums to put issues on the table and hear what the community has to say, up close and personal.
The Lord Mayor hosts face to face forums too, to talk and listen to the community and surrounding councils about everything from the big picture to the minor details. The Inner City Mayors Forum tackles light rail, cycling and housing regularly. In fact the group received a Federal Government grant of $456,000 to research affordable housing in the inner city.
Our Let’s Talk Business forums have grown in popularity since they were launched and in 2011 the Small Business, Thinking Big series attracted capacity crowds who gathered to discuss topics as broad as emerging technology, changing customer needs and successful leadership.
On an even bigger scale, our City Talks events fill the Town Hall with diverse audiences who come to hear guest speakers discuss ideas and concepts such as mobilising communities and creating cultural precincts. We also hold a range of other ‘City Conversations’ including Design Excellence Forums which keep us on the cutting edge.
